The club was founded in 1918,[1] and initially played in the Witney and District League.[2] In 1982 the club was taken over by the Carterton Boys club and was renamed Carterton Town.[2] In 1986 they moved up to Division One of the Hellenic League.[3] After winning Division One in 1989–90 the club were promoted to the Premier Division.[3]
Carterton were relegated back to Division One at the end of the 1991–92 season, but won the division again in 1993–94 to return to the Premier Division.[3] In 1998–99 they finished as Premier Division runners-up,[3] and went on to win the league's Supplementary Cup in 1999–2000 and the Challenge Cup in 2000–01.[4] In 2005 the club reverted to the name Carterton Football Club.[5] They remained in the Premier Division until being relegated to Division One West at the end of the 2010–11 season.[5] Although they won Division One West in 2015–16 and were promoted to the Premier Division,[3] the club withdrew from the league in September 2016 after their manager resigned and several players left.[6] However, the club aim to return to the league for the 2016–17 season.[7]
