Heritage Institute of Technology, popularly known as HITK or HIT, is a private autonomous^[1] engineering college in Anandapur, Kolkata, near the East Kolkata Township, West Bengal, India. It is affiliated to West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata. This institute is ranked among the top five engineering colleges in West Bengal.

History

Heritage Institute of Technology was set up on the eastern fringes of Kolkata in 2001 by a group of industrialists hailing from the flourishing information technology, electronics and related industries around Kolkata, and some public figures. The foundation behind the growth of HITK is the Kalyan Bharti Trust. To meet the demand for technical manpower and in view of fiscal constraints at the governmental level, the Kalyan Bharti Trust supplemented the state government’s efforts in setting up new engineering colleges by establishing the Heritage Institute of Technology in September 2000.

Campus

Heritage Institute of Technology is built on the Heritage campus, in Anandapur on the southeastern fringes of Kolkata. Along with HITK, the campus encompasses The Heritage School, Kolkata , The Heritage College, Kolkata and The Heritage Academy, Kolkata. It is a 10-minute drive from East Metropolitan Bypass (near Ruby Hospital, about 2 km away). The nearest airport is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum, Kolkata.

The institute has the following main buildings:

the ICT building houses the Information Technology, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering departments
the CME building houses the Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering departments
the Central Block houses the Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering departments
the BCA Building is the house for the Bachelor of Computer Application, Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration courses
the MCA Block houses the Master of Computer Application department

HITK has a bank operated by Punjab National Bank on its campus. HITK offers internet connectivity at its browsing center, with copier facilities on campus. The Central Library has more than 43,000 textbooks and reference books. The institute subscribes to a large number of journals, periodicals, proceedings, magazines, local and national dailies. Facilities at the library are constantly upgraded and expanded.

Departments in Faculty of Technology and Management

The institute offers one undergraduate course (B. Tech.) and three graduate courses (M. Tech., MBA and MCA). All courses are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education AICTE, Government of India and the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal. Since its inception, it has been affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata.^[2]

The institute has accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). According to the goals of the institute to establish itself as a Center of Excellence in Education and Research, there are plans to start Ph.D. courses in engineering and technology disciplines.

The graduate school offers full-time two-year Master of Technology (M. Tech.) degree in the following disciplines:

Admission to the undergraduate B.Tech. courses is done through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) and All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE),^[4] while for graduate M. Tech. courses, admission is done through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

The Computer Application Centre offers full-time three-year Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degree course and admission is through JECA.

The Management Education Center offers Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree as a full-time two-year course at the graduate level.

Training and placements

There are regular interactive workshops, seminars and short-term courses with the participation of academia and industry.^[5]^[6]^[7]^[8]^[9]^[10] The Campus Connect Programme is an academia-industry initiative to design the "education experience" launched by Infosys at HITK.

Student exchange

The institute signed an MoU with New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) for a student exchange programme^[11]^[12] under which the first batch of 20 students had a six-week training programme at NJIT during 2008. The seventh batch of students underwent the training programme in 2015.

It has signed an MoU with the College of Natural Science, Sungkyunkwan University.^[13] Negotiations are on with the University of Sussex for academic collaborations

Fests

Eclecia - The cultural fest is held every year in March.
Dakshh - The annual technology fest is a national level Tech-Fest started in 2007. DAKSHH 2008 saw more than 25 colleges participating.
Prarambh - The fest of the Management Education Centre is organised by the MBA students. It is a student-centered management fest focused on building skills and knowledge for upcoming managers. It takes place every fall around September.

The college fest was started by the first batch of Heritage Institute of Technology B.Tech batch in 2002 with the cooperation of faculty members and was held in CLT Mahal, Dhakuria, Kolkata. In the second year it was held in Najrul Mancha.

Eclecia 2014 was held between 10 and 12 April. The three-day extravaganza witnessed show-stoppers like the Bollywood singer KK, DJ Harish and famous city band, The Calcutta Blues.
