Larryboy: The Cartoon Adventures (also known as Larryboy) is an American children's direct-to-video series which is a spin-off of the computer animated series VeggieTales created by Big Idea Entertainment and Cornerstone Animation. The series premiered in 2002.[1]

Unlike its predecessor VeggieTales, LarryBoy was animated in Adobe Flash.[2] The series was short-lived and only ran for one season and four episodes.

From September 2006 to September 2009, NBC aired the series on its Qubo block.[3]

1"LarryBoy and the Angry Eyebrows"Awful AlvinMarch 16, 2002[4]
Awful Alvin has some new eyebrows. But these aren't just any eyebrows, these are angry eyebrows! When someone holds onto their anger, the eyebrows attach to their forehead! Discovering this, Larryboy sets out to stop Awful Alvin and his sidekick, Lampy. The episode ends as Bumblyburg police arrest Awful Alvin and everyone lets go of their anger.
2"Leggo My Ego!"The Alchemist and Mother PearlAugust 27, 2002[5]
Things seem normal in Bumblyburg until Larryboy notices that the residents are mysteriously shrinking. Larryboy discovers this is the work of two antagonists: the Alchemist and his mother. The Alchemist has a flower loaded with a mysterious powder which has the ability to shrink those who are exposed to it. The two capture the residents of Bumblyburg, taking them to their lab, and turn them into an evil replica of Larryboy. Larryboy enters the lab and manages to defeat the replica and return everyone to normal, prompting the Alchemist to take Bob hostage. Herbert and Wally bring in jelly donuts and squish them in a way the jelly fires at the Alchemist, causing him to lose his grip on Bob and release the powder on his mother. His mother, in anger, flings the powder back at him, causing him to shrink. The Alchemist and his mother are then arrested.
3"The Yodelnapper!"Greta Von GruesomeNovember 26, 2002[6]
Larryboy is excited over the new Hula Heidi dolls, but Archie doesn't know why he needs another one when he has all the others. After the Crazy Clay becomes alive and Larry turns into Larryboy, and he finds out someone has already bought every single Hula Heidi in the store and is devastated, he goes to the Larry Manor and jumps in the mud, before Archie tells him his favorite yodeler, Eingel Warbulthroat, is performing. The performance goes horribly wrong when the antagonist of the episode, Greta Von Gruesome, kidnaps Eingel and takes him to her castle, where she demands every yodeler in the world be placed. Inside, pudding may be dumped on any yodeler at any second. With his sidekick, Archie, Larryboy disguises himself as a yodeler and has himself kidnapped by Greta Von Gruesome to sneak into her castle. There, he reveals himself as Larryboy and escapes his chamber using the robotic sheep he'd brought with him, which breaks the glass allowing him to escape. He releases the five trapped yodelers, frustrating Greta Von Gruesome, who opens a trapdoor making him and the five yodelers fall into a pit, where he comes upon an army of Hula Heidi dolls, which Greta Von Gruesome is controlling. Larryboy tries to fight them off, but is unsuccessful so he plunges to the ceiling. Eingel plays a polka tune at the request of Larryboy and manages to destroy all the Hula Heidi dolls. Larryboy then gives Greta Von Gruesome a taste of her own pudding and wraps his plunger around her. Greta Von Gruesome is arrested and placed behind bars while Larryboy witnesses a "Tribute to Larryboy" concert hosted by all five of the yodelers. The Crazy Clay returns and attempts to fight Larryboy once again, but is interrupted and begins dancing when polka music beings playing through the robotic sheep by the request of Larryboy himself.
4"The Good, The Bad and the Eggly!"Awful Alvin and Greta Von GruesomeJune 10, 2003[7]
Awful Alvin and Greta Von Gruesome are out of jail. After the Larry-Plane crash-lands in some woods pending the near-escape of three flying pigs with bacon-and-egg guns, Larryboy discovers the Dark Crow, who saves him from the three pigs. He is the hero of Bumblyburg's neighboring town. The two team up and stop Awful Alvin and Greta Von Gruesome in their tracks in the science lab, before Larryboy makes a mistake and allows the two antagonists to steal a machine called the Overeasy Egg Ray which turns anything not alive into eggs. Using it, they steal various antiques from a museum and kidnap Vicky. Larryboy and the Dark Crow, stripped of their supersuits, try to defeat Awful Alvin and Greta Von Gruesome but fail leading them to be kidnapped themselves. There, they free themselves by swinging back and forth and directing a ray to a rope that's holding them. Larryboy then proceeds to destroy the Overeasy Egg Ray and is successful but then gets himself knocked out by Awful Alvin and Greta Von Gruesome. Larryboy is trapped until the Dark Crow frees him, trapping Awful Alvin and Lampy in the process. They then proceed to trap Greta Von Gruesome. The two antagonists and Lampy are arrested and jailed once again and the Overeasy Egg Ray is returned to the science lab, though it's damaged. Vicky brings up the Founder's Day Dance and Larryboy agrees he wants to go with her to it. The Dark Crow catches up to them at the last second as they are leaving.

Shorts

No. Title Original air date
1"Fly By Might"March 16, 2002[4]
Larryboy is enjoying a vacation and a drink when a mysterious fly comes upon him and begins bothering him. Frustrated, he tries to kill it in every way possible but ends up knocking himself out after multiple failed attempts. The short ends as the fly is enjoying its own drink on Larryboy himself.
2"Cuke of All Trades"August 27, 2002[5]
It's Larryboy's birthday, so he decides to go into the city. There, it's unusually quiet for a Tuesday, and Larryboy hopes no one has forgotten about his birthday. He goes into Mahoney's Bakery and decides to watch it while Mahoney himself goes out. Things turn to chaos quickly, resulting in Larryboy running to the candle shop across from the bakery and then running out of the bakery itself only to find himself inside his own birthday cake, made by the two buildings which have exploded on their interiors. Mahoney returns and, along with all the other residents, wishes him a happy birthday.
3"A Polar Pickle"November 26, 2002[6]
A pickle and his friend visit a zoo and come upon a penguin exhibit. They get excited at them, but then the pickle's friend knocks his fish toy out of his hand, sending it plummeting down into the exhibit. Two of the penguins begin fighting over it while the pickle cries over losing his toy. This prompts Archie to summon Larryboy, who goes through various obstacles provided by the penguins and eventually retrieves the toy, using one of the penguins to give it back to the pickle. The pickle then again loses the toy to the polar bear exhibit by his friend knocking it out of his hand, and again cries over it. Archie tries to summon Larryboy once again, but Larryboy shows to Archie how tired he is after having retrieved the toy.
4"Merry-Go-Wreck"June 10, 2003[7]
Larryboy agrees to do what Bok Choy is asking of a single superhero; that is, clean a pile of erasers. Electro-Melon and Lemon Twist go to the Bumblyburg Amusement Park and end up accidentally destroying it over disagreements between each other. Larryboy, once finished cleaning the erasers, arrives to see the now-destroyed amusement park. Seeing the Electro-Melon and Lemon Twist fighting, he intervenes and asks them to stop, asking what they've been doing. The two then look around and realize what they've done to the amusement park, and take shame for it. Larryboy then tells them they should work together as a team to repair the damages. After repairing the damages, they then join Larryboy and the three begin walking into the now-repaired amusement park while eating cotton candy and popcorn.

Reception

The series was nominated for a Golden Reel Award in 2003 for Best Sound Editing in Direct to Video, but lost to The Adventures of Tom Thumb & Thumbelina.[8] Furthermore, according to the creator Phil Vischer, fans of the original VeggieTales series criticized the series for its cheap-looking animation. Mixed with Big Idea's bankruptcy at the time, the series ended after four episodes.[9]

Home media

All of the episodes were released in VHS and DVD formats the following years they were made. All four of the episodes were also released on both the Bumblyburg Super Value Pack released in 2004[10] and The Larryboy: Power Pack released in 2009.[11]
