Lira University (LU), is a university in Uganda. It is one of the eleven public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country.

Location

The university campus is located on approximately 500 acres (200 ha) of land, about 5 kilometres (3 mi), by road, southwest of downtown Lira along the Rwekunye–Apac–Aduku–Lira–Kitgum–Musingo Road.[1] The coordinates of the university campus are 2°12'34.0"N, 32°52'12.0"E (Latitude:2.209434; Longitude:32.870011).[2]

History

The university first opened in August 2012 with 100 students.[1] At that time the institution was a constituent college of Gulu University and was known as Gulu University Constituent College Lira.[3] It was also referred to as Lira University College.[4]

In June 2015, the Uganda Ministry of Education elevated the college to university status, effective in the 2016/2017 academic year, which begins in August 2016.[5]
