The Logan Thunder started in 2008 replacing New Zealand-based team Christchurch Sirens. They were the first team to represent South East Queensland in over 10 years. Thunder withdrew from the 2014/15 WNBL season due to financial difficulties and the team later folded.[2]

In March 2015, a new WNBL side was announced based in South East Queensland. Known as the South East Queensland Stars, the team will be coached by former Olympian, Shane Heal.[3]
