Marvi Memon (Urdu: ماروی میمن) is a Pakistani politician who is the current Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme with the status of Minister of State.[1][2] A leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), Memon has been an elected member of the National Assembly of Pakistan on reserved seats for women on the PML-N’s ticket since 2013.[2][3]
Early life
Memon did her schooling in Karachi and Paris. She graduated from London School of Economics with a major in International Relations.[4][3]
Prior to joining politics, Memon worked at Citibank and helped with the launch of a vehicle tracking service provider in Pakistan, Trakker.[3] She joined Pakistan Television Corporation to advise on media management during Musharraf’s tenure. Memon is known for being one of the youngest female CEO of a multinational in Pakistan.[4] She also served in the media management wing of the Inter-Services Public Relations.[3]
Political career
Memon was elected as the member of the National Assembly of Pakistan on Pakistan Muslim League (Q) seat for the first time in Pakistani general election, 2008 on a reserved seat for women from Punjab despite being from Sindh.[3] She resigned from the National Assembly seat in 2011[5] and left the party after the PML-Q joined the coalition government.[6][7]
Memon joined PML-N in 2012.[8][2][7]
In Pakistani general election, 2013, she contested the Constituency NA-237 for National Assembly seat but lost it to a PPP candidate.[9][2] However, she was re-elected as the member of the National Assembly for the second time on a reserved seat for women from Punjab on PML-N seat.[9]
She was serving as Prime minister’s youth wing central coordinator[10] before she was appointed Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Program with status of Minister of State in November 2015.[2]
She is author of the memoir My Parliamentary Diaries.[3]
