The para-elemental is a classification of elemental in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game.

Publication history

The ice para-elemental, the magma para-elemental, the ooze para-elemental, and the smoke para-elemental first appeared in the first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[1]

The ice paraelemental, the magma paraelemental, the ooze paraelemental, and the smoke paraelemental appeared in second edition for the Planescape setting in Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix III (1998).[2]

The elder, great, huge, large, medium, and small ice paraelemental appeared in third edition in Dungeon #87 (July 2001). The ice paraelemental, the magma paraelemental, the ooze paraelemental, and the smoke paraelemental (each with the varieties of elder, great, huge, large, medium and small) appeared in the third edition Manual of the Planes (2001).[3]

Description

The para-elementals are the inhabitants of the para-elemental planes of Ice, Ooze, Magma, and Smoke, which lie between the major elemental planes of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.

Paraelementals fuse two of the classic elements into a single dangerous creature.

Types of paraelementals include ice (air and water), magma (earth and fire), ooze (earth and water), and smoke (air and fire).
