Praboromarajchanok Institute (Thai: กลุ่มนักศึกษาแพทยศาสตร์พระบรมราชชนก), or the Praboromarajchanok Medicine program, the 13th medical program established in Thailand, founded in 1997. Praboromarajchanok Institute is a medical school which consists of a collection of Medical Education Centers (MEC), in the Collaborative Project to Increase Production of Rural Doctor (CPIRD). Mahidol University approved 4 Hospitals ( Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, Sawanpracharak Hospital, Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital and Ratchaburi Hospital ) as teaching affiliates in this project, offers one undergraduate program; Doctor of medicine program (M.D.) - PIMD/B, which produce around 132 medical doctors annually.

History

In 1992, the Cabinet decided that Thailand health system needed more medical doctors especially in upcountry. Because of need to produce more rural medical doctors has been emphasized, the Cabinet approved Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Education to set up a new model of medical education in rural area of Thailand called "Collaborative Project to Increase Production of Rural Doctor ;(CPIRD)" in 1994, responsible by Praboromarajchanok Institute which was subsequently changed to "Office of administration for Collaborative Project to Increase Production of Rural Doctor" in 1997.

Official agreement between the Ministry of Public Health and Mahidol University was signed in 1997 with its publication in the Government Gazette on September 14, 1999. Mahidol University approved 4 Hospitals ( Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, Sawanpracharak Hospital, Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital and Ratchaburi Hospital ) as teaching affiliates in this project.

It offers one undergraduate program; Doctor of medicine program (M.D.) - PIMDB. The first batch (PI'01) of 16 medical students from Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital started education in 1997, also include Sawanpracharak Hospital, Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital and Ratchaburi Hospital in 1999. The number of medical students in a batch has reached from 16 (PI'01-02) to 80 (PI'03-06), 88 (PI'07-08), 96 (PI'09-10), 120 (PI'11-12), and now 132 (PI'13-14).
