Os Mutantes: Caminhos do Coração (Portuguese for The Mutants: Pathways of the Heart) is a Brazilian telenovela originally aired on Rede Record.
Plot
The first season of Caminhos do Coração contains: The revelation of the mystery of Maria's kidnapping, the discovery of the identity of the person responsible for the crimes of the now bankrupt biotech company Progênese, the transformation of Julia Zaccarias to Juli Di Trevi, the identity she assumed after taking rejuvenating serum, and the disclosure of Mariana, mother of twins Maria and Samira.
Changes continue to spread, transforming men and women in vampires, felines, snakes, spiders and werewolves, which attack the streets of São Paulo, disseminating evil, as an epidemic. The terrified population pursues all mutants.
Maria and Marcelo meet the League of Good (composed of Noah, Cleo, Tony, Bobby, Janet, Vavá, Pachola, Perpétua, Leonor, Lúcio, Bianca, Juno, Tati, Kaspar, Ágata, Aquiles, Cris, Yara, Nathy, Valente, Simone, Newton, Marisa, Willie, Erica, Eugene, Angela and Clare) in the mansion that belonged to the Mayer family. This becomes the refuge and general headquarters of the well mutants.
Samira is the twin sister of Maria, stuck in the laboratory of Dr. Júlia since birth and for 30 years. She was reported as dead. Samira is the most powerful and evil mutant, as she can absorb all the powers of other mutants. She is the right arm of Dr. Júlia Zaccarias, transformed into Dr. Juli Di Trevi, aiming to exterminate all who thwart her.
DEPECOM
DEPECOM (DEpartamento de PEsquisa e COntrole de Mutantes, which in Portuguese stands for DEpartment of REsearch and COntrol of Mutants), is restructured, and rises to the latest generation technology to stop the mutants.
The DEPECOM is divided into two wings. One is composed of Marcelo, Miguel, Aline, Marta, Beto and Ernesto, who want to hold the violent in prison, and preserve the peaceful. They investigate the Evil League (composed of Juli, Samira, Gór, Taveira, Eric, Metamorpho, Fernando, Ariadne, Draco and Telê), which was organized in São Paulo, and their commanders: Juli and Gó. This wing gathers mutant gray wolves, vampires, werewolves, snakes, spiders and other dangerous creatures. The second wing is represented by Fredo and Adolfo, who want to exterminate all mutants, including peaceful.
The Mystery of Valente
Valente discovers confidential information in the Omega File, revealing that Julia is an alien. Valente pays the price for these discoveries. He is attacked by Fredo and his followers; he survives, but loses his memory. He has only one portfolio, with some papers, cards and documents. He is saved by Gabriela, a doctor. While he tries to unravel the mystery of his own past, he is pursued by Fredo who wants to kill Valente before his own past comes to light.
Nati is a vampire with a conscience, who will one day help Valente to find out who he is; she is bitten by Taveira and becomes a vampire. She is not affiliated with the Evil League and is persecuted for exercising her free will and sharing passion with Valente; her good nature overcomes her contamination and she joins the League of Good to help fight villains.
Saving babies, saving the world
Janete's powers evolve. She can see into the future, and discovers the survival of the human species depends on the survival of the children of Lúcio and Bianca. Those children must be protected or all humanity will be dominated by vicious mutants. Bianca and Leonor are sent to the Arraial Island with their babies and join the League of Well. Juli discovers Janete's premonition, and along with members of the Evil League, attacks the babies and their mothers, who are being protected by the League of Good.[1]
Journey to the center of the Earth
Trying to save the babies of Lúcio and Juno by underground tunnels of the island, Maria, Noé, Beto, Perpétua, Cléo and Toni are attacked by mutant insects, the Ants Men, Tarantula Men and Large Spiders. Beto and Perpétua escape but the others are taken captive by the Carpenter ant Men and taken to Agartha. The Ant Queen tells them they are in Shangri-La, capital of Agartha, at the center of the earth.
Juno and Lúcio return to Melquior, the prince of Agartha, who leads the League of Good in the fight against the reptilian aliens and Evil League. If they join the Reptilian army and Evil League, mankind will perish but if the babies join good, mankind will prevail and the reptilians will be defeated.
Vampire League
The mutant vampire Dracula and his lieutenant Bram find the former headquarter of the League of Evil and take it over. They recruit vampires to form the Vampire League, a branch of the League of Evil that throws blood-drinking parties constantly. Nati, a vampire herself, puts an end to their thirst for destruction.

References to other media
Allusions to Heroes
- The protagonist Maria Mayer initially was inspired by Niki Sanders in both appearance and powers.
- The main lead, Maria and Samira Mayer both have the ability to copy or absorb other peoples abilities derived from the Heroes protagonist, Peter Petrelli. Also, their grandmother, Simone, has occasionally prophetical dreams about the future, much like Peter's mother in Heroes, Angela Petrelli.
- The villain Draco with the power of pyrokinesis has a similar role to Flint Gordon in the third season in Heroes.
- The vampire Vlado is capable of absorbing other people's powers by drinking their blood, like Sylar tends to open his victims' brains to steal their ability.
Allusions to other works
- The zombies appearing in the series are similar to the Infected in the 2007 adaptation of I Am Legend, having animalistic urges and being brain-dead killing mutants.
- The Arraial Island, used as prison and concentration camp, is inspired by the Island of Dr. Moreau: The scientist Doctor Julia Zacarias is creating mutants by mixing their DNA with that of animals.
- The Reptilians are a race with the same intent into destroying humankind, as the same of the Martians in The War of the Worlds.
- Also, a vampire called Dracula is inspired in the fictional Count Dracula. He has sharp canine fangs, can fly, has superhuman strength, can run at superhuman speeds and is able to shape-shift into a monstrous bat. He has a lieutenant called Bram, an homage to Dracula's creator Bram Stoker.
- Another vampire called Nosferatu appeared only once to be gunned down by a DERECON agent. Although he looked normal, his body burned into a cloud of smoke, like the hideous vampires.
- The character Valiant came from a distant, post-apocalyptic future where the world has been plunged into destruction at the hands of the mutants, and time travels to the present in order to stop this events from happening. This plot is inspired by Days of Future Past and the Terminator series.
- Several characters are also inspired by Marvel superheroes: Tatiana Montenegro (Jean Grey), her father Marcelo Montengro (Nick Fury) and others such as Perpetual (Storm), Ferraz (Hannibal King), Christiano Pena (Vulcan), Goliath (Henry Pym), Ice-Man (Bobby Drake), Rosana Magalhães (Blade), Achilles Magalhães (Quicksilver), Telê (Emma Frost), Gorgon (Lady Mastermind), Isis (Invisible Woman), Pachola (Jacob Russel), Lupo (James "Logan" Howlett), Sansom (Juggernaut, Meduson (Scott Summers), Luciano Solar (Northstar), Cleo Mayer (Darwin), Martha Pureza (Maria Hill), Aline Reis (Sharon Carter), João Ricardo Borbagato de Albuquerque (Norman Osborn), Ariadne (Jessica Drew), Hiromi-san (Black Widow), Fredo Cavalcantti (Henry Peter Gyrich), Emanuel Gottardo (Robert Kelly), Eric Fusilly (Victor Creed) and among several others.
