The Trade Mission of the ROC (Taiwan), Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria (Chinese: 駐南非駐奈及利亞代表處; pinyin: Zhù Nàijílìyǎ Dàibiǎo Chù) represents the interests of Taiwan in Nigeria in the absence of formal diplomatic relations, functioning as a de facto embassy.
Its counterpart in Taiwan is the Nigeria Trade Office in Taiwan, R.O.C. in Taipei.[3]
Unlike most of Taiwan's other missions, which use the word "Taipei in their titles, the Trade Mission uses "ROC", an abbreviation of "Republic of China", although Nigeria has had diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China since 1971.[4]
It also has responsibility for Taiwan's interests in Cameroon, Benin, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone.[5] Previously, Taiwan had diplomatic relations with Gambia, and there was an Embassy of the Republic of China in Banjul.[6] However, these were broken off in 2013 by President Yahya Jammeh.[7] Liberia similarly broke off diplomatic relations with Taipei in 2003.[8]
The Mission was established in Lagos in 1991, before relocating to Abuja in 2001, despite requests from Beijing that it be located outside the Nigerian capital.[1]
It is headed by a Representative, currently Morgan Chao.[2]
