The Amazing Race Australia 1 is the first series of the Australian reality television game show The Amazing Race Australia, the Australian version of The Amazing Race. The first series featured eleven teams of two in a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world to win the grand prize of A$250,000. The show was produced by activeTV Australia.[2]

The show premiered on Australia's Seven Network on 16 May 2011 at 8:30pm.[3] The series finale was aired on 1 August 2011.[4]

The series concluded with best friends and surfers Tyler Atkins and Nathan Jolliffe winning the race.[5]

Production

Filming and Development

The first series of The Amazing Race Australia started in Melbourne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with a Roadblock sending racers up and down one of the stadium's six light towers.

Filming began on 5 November 2010 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne.[6] The race travelled across four continents, 11 countries and 23 cities.[7] Some of the countries visited during the series include: Indonesia and Israel.[8] Indonesia was later visited in the nineteenth series of the original American version in October 2011.

During the Vietnam leg, all route markers were coloured yellow and green instead of yellow and red. This was done to avoid confusion with the former South Vietnamese national flag, which is also yellow and red. The route markers for the Vietnam leg were similar to those used in A Corrida Milionária, the Brazilian version of the race.

Leg 7 and Leg 8 formed a double-length leg.

Cast

Application deadline for the first series closed on 17 September 2010 (extended from 6 September 2010[9]) initially with the applicants required to be at least 18 years old with citizenship or permanent residency. However, due to insurance issues overseas, the minimum age for applicants was raised from 18 to 21 years of age.[10][11][12]

The cast includes married fitness entrepreneurs, farmers, friends of Egyptian descent, models, Big W workmates and reunited sisters. Notably, Nathan, who teams up with Tyler, is boyfriend of 2006 Miss Australia, Erin McNaught.[13] Renae was also the runner up of Miss Universe Australia 2010.[7] Entrepreneurs Richard & Joey Marc are the authors of Please Mum, Don't Supersize Me!.[14] Ryot & Liberty are the brother and sister of the comedian Rebel Wilson.

After the race

Dating couple Chris and Anastasia have since split up, although they deny that their relationship was negatively affected by television exposure.[15]

Nathan was a contestant on the second series of The Celebrity Apprentice Australia on the Nine Network, in which he came second losing to Music Guru Ian "Dicko" Dickson. in the final challenge. He raised $80,000 for his charity Epilepsy Australia.

Richard & Joey have a new TV Show on Foxtel called Feel Good TV [16]

After the series, Mel replaced Maude Garrett as a co-host of the Hot30 Countdown on the Today Radio Network, where she later gained international notoriety for her role in a controversial prank call to an English hospital which was treating HRH The Duchess of Cambridge for morning sickness.[17] Subsequently she also appeared on the fourth series of The Celebrity Apprentice Australia. She was eliminated in episode 8 and raised $10,000 for Endometriosis Australia.

Mo has a role on a new Muslim sketch comedy show on SBS called "Legally Brown"

The Amazing Race Australia is sponsored by Canon, National Australia Bank, Honda, Vodafone and Gloria Jean's.[18] The Amazing Race Australia also has an app for Android, iPhone and Blackberry where the user can track the teams and watch full episodes.

  1. ^ Anne-Marie and Tracy arrived in 8th place - however, for an unknown reason the team left the pitstop in 9th place.
  2. ^ Mo & Mos initially arrived 4th, but were issued a 30-minute penalty for being "marked for elimination" and not arriving 1st. As Mo & Mos were waiting out their penalty, Jeff & Luke, Sam & Renae, and Kelly & Dave checked in, dropping Mo & Mos to 7th.

Leg 1 (Australia → Indonesia)

The islet of Gili Trawangan was the first pit stop in the inaugural series of The Amazing Race Australia.

The inaugural series of The Amazing Race Australia started at Melbourne Cricket Ground with 11 teams stood inside the cricket ground. They were given their first task: the Roadblock, asking "Who is your tower of strength?". One team member had to scale (or climb) then abseil one of the six light towers 75 metres (246 ft) before retrieving their next clue. The clue instructed to travel to their first destination: the Indonesian island of Lombok. First, they must take a flight to Bali. The first flight via Darwin arrives first, and the second flight–the direct flight–arriving an hour and 20 minutes after the first.

Upon arriving in Bali, teams had to head to BlueWater Express where they signed up for one of three boats leaving for Lombok. The first boat, leaving at 6:00 AM could contain the first three teams, while the remaining boats (leaving at 30 minute intervals after the first boat) could carry four teams each. Once in Lombok, teams disembarked at Papak Beach and searched a marked fishing boat with a nets to find their next clue, instructing them to Pura Lingsar temple and must participate a rice war ritual called perang topat, where teams were showered with rice powder by locals, before receiving their next clue.

The clue was soon found out for the Detour, given the teams choice between Cash or Carry. In Cash, teams were required to make and sell the local traditional bakso for no less than Rp 5,000 per bowl, and were required to sell 15 of them. Once they sold, the store manager would get their next clue. In Carry, teams were required to find a market stall and carry traditional produce on their heads to another market stall within the same market before retrieving their next clue.

The post-Detour clues teams made their way to Malimbu Beach and rode an outrigger to Gili Trawangan Island. Both team members were required to dive onto Halik Reef where one of them only needed to retrieve a briefcase at the bottom. Upon arriving back at the shore, teams had to count the money in the briefcase where totals varied from team to team and use this as the combination to retrieve the next clue, instructing them to ride a cidomo to the Pit Stop.

Leg 2 (Indonesia → Vietnam)

This Leg's Pit Stop was located at the citadel of the former Vietnamese capital in Huế.

At the start of the leg, teams were instructed to travel to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Upon departing, they had an option of taking a Fast Boat back to Denpasar to make a connecting flight to Ho Chi Minh City or taking a flight directly from the island of Lombok. Once in Ho Chi Minh City, they made their way to Saigon Opera House where they had to search amongst hundreds of women wearing a nón lá to find one that had their name written on the hat. They would exchange a fan with their name on it with the woman for their next clue.

The clue instructed teams to travel to the imperial city of Huế. Once in Huế, they made their way to Trần Thanh Mại Garage and had to pick a marked army jeep for the rest of the leg to change the tire and engine oil in order to receive their next clue. The clue was for the Detour, given a choice of Carry Fowl or Carabao. In Carry Fowl, teams head to a Bang Chicken farm and gather twenty live chickens to carry them (the traditional way - on their shoulder) into a marked designed retailer at a nearby market. In Carabao, teams travel to a rice paddy and had to choose a marked field to use an ox-drawn plow to till the soil, until the plow caught on a buried rope attached to a hidden clue.

The post-Detour clues instructed teams to travel to Khải Định Tomb to pick up next clue, which containing the Roadblock, asking "Who's in line for a king's ransom?". One team member had to retrieve seven coins representing the seven emperors of the Nguyễn Dynasty in Vietnam at Minh Mạng Tomb, bring them back to Khải Định Tomb for instructions. At the Khải Định Tomb, they had to put the coins in the correct order of the reign of the emperors. Though the coins are required information on a workstation at each table, they are not unaware to put in wrong order and needed to return to Minh Mang Tomb. Once they put in the correct order, a "king" would receive their next clue, sending them to the Pit Stop at Huế Citadel.

Leg 3 (Vietnam → Hong Kong, China → Macau, China)

While in Hong Kong, teams visited the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, where they bit into fortune cookies for clue.

The leg started where teams instructed to fly to Hong Kong. Upon arriving in Hong Kong, they headed to Jumbo Floating Restaurant where they had to bite into fortune cookies until they came across one with a specific message inside, telling them to receive their next clue from the waiter. The Fast Forward where teams had to perform a Buddhist ritual that monks and nuns usually perform in their lives: shave their heads bald. Once both team members' hair had been completely shaved off, they would win the Fast Forward.

Other teams had to participate with the Detour, given a choice of Lion Dance and Kung Fu Stance. Both Detours must travel to Walled City Park. In Lion Dance, teams had to dress up and perform a traditional lion dance. To get their next clue, they must take a satisfaction of the lion dance master. In Kung Fu Stance, teams had to perform a series of precise Kung Fu movements to the satisfaction of the Kung Fu master, then break six clay tiles before receiving their next clue.

The post-Detour clues must travel by ferry to Macau and headed to The Venetian Macao where upon entering the casino, they changed into formal wear and played one of the most popular Asian card games, Baccarat. Each win earned teams a Mahjong lettered tile. After ten wins, the tiles directed teams to their next location: A Ma Cultural Village and their next clue. At the Cultural Village, they picked up their clue for the Roadblock, where teams asking "Who can crack the animal code?". One team member had to arrange 12 lanterns representing the animals of the Chinese zodiac in chronological order using clues given to them in their Route Info. Once the order was correct, both team members could continue on to the Pit Stop.

Leg 4 (Macau, China → South Africa)

For the leg's Roadblock, teams encountered on a world's largest bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge outside of Port Elizabeth.

During the break at the Pit Stop, all teams were moved from A Ma Cultural Village to the Pit Start at Ruins of St. Paul's, teams instructing to head to Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Upon arriving in Port Elizabeth, they had to search a marked vehicle from the airport car park and find a hidden clue inside the windscreen. Telling them to head to Camdeboo National Park outside of the city and they must find The Valley of Desolation to locate a "sheer-cliff face" to find their next clue.

The clue turned out to be the Detour, a choice between Smash and Bash. Both Detours would require teams to drive to Kragga Kamma Game Park. In Smash, from a distance, teams would have to throw a traditional South African club called a knobkierie at four vases suspended in the air. Once all four vases were shattered, teams would receive their next clue. In Bash, teams had to build a large giraffe feeder, only using the tools and materials provided. If the feeder had been assembled according to the park ranger's preference, he would hand the teams their next clue.

The post-Detour clues told there is a U-Turn on this leg, and their next clue. Tyler & Nathan chose to U-Turn Richard & Joey. The clue was eventually discovered a Roadblock, the teams asking "Who wants to take the plunge?". One team member would have to perform and endure the world's largest bungee jump off the Bloukrans Bridge at a height of 216 metres (709 ft). After the team member completed the traumatizing fall, teams would receive their next clue. The clue sending teams to a healer in Nomathamsanqa where they had to collect a goat from a pen and transport it to a witch doctor known as a sangoma to receive their next clue, directing them to the Pit Stop at Addo Elephant National Park.

Leg 5 (South Africa)

Teams met up on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town to team up for an Intersection.

The leg began where teams had to fly to Cape Town. Upon arriving in Cape Town, teams traveled to Dolphin Beach and with their next clue. That clue was for the Roadblock and asking "Who's up for a Bird's Eye View of Cape Town?". Teams had to drive themselves to Melkboss Air Strip and one team member had to perform a tandem skydive at a height of 9,000 feet (2,700 m). The non-participating team member must help guide them to the landing zone using signal flares. After the team member completed the fall, the instructor would hand them their next clue.

The post-Roadblock clue instructing them to the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and find Nobel Square for the Intersection. The task where intersected teams must drive themselves to Kargo Warehouse had to load a large truck with school supplies and deliver them to Intyatyambo Orphanage. Once all the materials were delivered, the teams would receive their next clue. Teams were no longer intersected after this task.

The clue was eventually discovered the Detour and a choice was between Guns and Rosé. In Guns, teams had to use shot guns to shoot 9 different moving clay tiles at the Valley Gun Club. They must alternate within 5 clay tiles. Once all the tiles were obliterated, teams would receive their next clue. In Rosé, teams had to carry a large wine barrel to a winery called Nelson's Creek Wine Estate where they had to find a wining station and fill the barrel with the wine, rosé. Once the barrel was completely filled to the brim, teams would be given their next clue.

The clues after the Detour directed them to Atlantis Dunes and where they had to drive all-terrain vehicles to an area filled with 15 covered baskets. Three of the baskets held their next clues, while the other baskets had different sand-filled hourglasses. If the teams uncovered a basket with an hourglass, they had to wait for the sand to pour out of the hourglass before being able to start searching again. The hourglasses were different sizes, so some took longer to pour out than others. The clue teams received and sending them to the Pit Stop at Rhodes Memorial.

Leg 6 (South Africa → The Netherlands → Czech Republic)

Teams visited the Oud Hollands Gebakkraam food cart in Amsterdam where each team member had to eat two appelbollen before receiving their next clue.

The leg began and teams were informed to head to Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Upon arriving in Amsterdam, teams had to head to Oud Hollands Gebakkraam, a food stall in the streets of the city where each team member had to eat two appelbollen (Dutch), a Belgian pastry popular in the Netherlands that is made out of a whole cored apple wrapped in puff pastry, before they would receive their next clue. The first four teams to finish their appelbollen also received tickets for a sleeping car on the train that would take them on the 15-hour ride to Prague, Czech Republic; while the remaining three teams were given tickets for standard seats on a passenger car.

Once in Prague, teams went to Powder Tower and find the cluebox across the road for their clue, instructing them to the famous Charles Bridge where they searched for a 'holey' statue, being left to figure out the clue meant the Statue of St. Vitus and their next clue was hidden in a hole in its base.

The clue was for the Detour giving them teams choice between Chivalry or Delivery. In Chivalry, teams dressed in knight's armor in Old Town Square and searched the for a mysterious man with a key. They then had to search the square for a damsel in distress at the Hotel U Prince and exchange the key for their next clue. In Delivery, teams had to carry a young "princess" in a royal sedan chair from the St. Agnes of Bohemia Convent to the "palace" at Narodni Galerie to receive their next clue.

The clue was encountered with the Roadblock, where teams asking "Whose aim is true?". One team member had to travel to Střelecký Island and find a medieval village where one team member had to hit a target on the archery range twice in 40 attempts. If their arrow hit a bullseye, they would receive a A$50 bonus from National Australia Bank and their next clue, sending them to the Pit Stop at Prague Castle.

Leg 7 (Czech Republic)

While in Prague, teams paid a visit to the infamous Dancing House.

The leg began teams traveled to Dancing House and had to locate a vintage car made by Škoda Auto, that they were to use for the duration of the leg, which contained their next clue, instructing them to Štvanice Stadium where teams had to score one goal against a goalkeeper for the Czech national hockey team to receive their next clue.

The clue teams headed to St. Nicolas Church where they had to collect cameras and climb at the top of the cathedral tower 304 steps high to a "Soviet Spy" post, whereupon they had 30 seconds to locate and take a photograph of a man waving a flag with race colours, introduced in the previous clue as a "person of interest". Teams were deemed to have failed this task if they took a picture of a man waving a flag advertising a local museum. If teams took a picture of the correct man, they received their next clue. If they did not, they had to return to the bottom of the tower and, whilst climbing back up, count the number of steps, with a correct answer providing the next clue. If they fail the task, they must climb up again to get it right.

The clue was for the Detour, given the teams choice between Stack Up and Stack In. In Stack Up, teams went into the Pilsner Urquell Brewery where they had to load a pallet with cases of their pilsener beer and had to transport 90 slabs of beer to the factory line with two pallets until they both hold 45 slabs until receiving their next clue. In Stack In, teams had to consume 18 traditional Czech sausages called játernice which were made from pig offal where they eat one whole serving in order to receive their next clue.

The post-Detour clues instructing them to the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Kutná Hora and they picked the Roadblock clue, asking "Who wants to scale the heavenly heights?". One team member climbed to the top of the church before climbing into a window at the top spire. Then had to pick up the clue and abseil down to the church floor, with the church choir's singing accompanying them on the way down. The clue teams directed to Sedlec Ossuary (known as "Church of Bones" in the show) for the Pit Stop. However, Grant gave the teams' clues and told them to keep racing.

Leg 8 (Czech Republic → Poland)

The Roadblock of this Leg took place down in Kraków's Wieliczka Salt Mine, where teams had to push a minecart along a route and then search through it for a key to unlock their next clue.

Airdate: 4 July 2011

Teams received the clue from the Pit Stop and instructed them to travel by train to Kraków, Poland. Upon arriving in Kraków, teams had to find a marked vehicle at the railway station which contained their next clue. The clue was for the Roadblock, where teams asking "When push comes to shove, who digs adventure?". Teams made their way to Wieliczka Salt Mine and one team member had to push a mine cart through the mine until they reached the end of the line. They then had to dig through the cart to find crystalline keys, one of which unlocked the crypt containing the next clue.

The clue eventually discovered with the Detour, a choice between Herd and Hoe Down. Both Detours must travel to Zakopane. In Herd, teams travelled to the Polish countryside, where they had to build a pen using the fences provided and herd at least the three sheep marked with a red stripe into it in order to receive their next clue. In Hoe Down, teams travelled to Karczma Czarci Jar Restaurant where they donned traditional clothing and learned a Polish axe dance. Once the judge was satisfied with their dancing, they received the next clue. The clue instructed teams to head to Cape Stylchen and the Intersection board, the instercted teams must cut four slices off of a large log using a two-man saw to receive their next clue. Teams no longer intersected after this task, and the clue sending them to the Pit Stop at Niedzica Castle.

Leg 9 (Poland → Israel)

Upon arriving in Israel, teams visited Azrieli Center for a clue.

The leg began where teams had to fly to Tel Aviv, Israel. Upon arriving in Tel Aviv, they made their way to Azrieli Center and went through the tower's penthouse for their next clue. That clue was for the Roadblock asking "Who is your driving force?". Teams must travel by train to Haifa. Once in Haifa, they went to the Port of Haifa where one team had member to rig a container truck, drive it through an obstacle course and back up to its final loading space to get their next clue.

The post-Roadblock clue teams instructed to head to Hasimta Theatre where each team member had to separately answer five questions about the other teams of the Race. The questions were:

If the other team member has both the same answer and question matched, they would receive their next clue.

The clue was for the Detour, a choice between Find Unseen and Make 13. Both Detours must head themselves to Jerusalem Beach. In Find Unseen, teams used a metal detector to a search marked area for a key that would unlock a chest containing the next clue. In Make 13, teams had to play matkot, a traditional Israeli bat and ball game similar to racquet. They had to hit the ball back and forth 13 times without letting it hit the ground before they would receive their next clue. The post-Detour clues teams picked up a marked Race-provided cars and drive themselves to the ancient Masada ruins for the Pit Stop.

Leg 10 (Israel)

In the "Pilgrim's Trail" Detour in Jerusalem, teams had to carry an 80-kg Cross along the Via Dolorosa, the path Jesus took to the site of historical crucifixion.

During the Pit Stop, teams recorded messages to their loved ones at home, where they must hold the memory sticks for further notice. Teams began the leg in Masada and take the cable car up to the ruins to find the Winter Palace of King Herod, where they would find their next clue, instructing them to Qumran in Kalya to pick up their next clue.

That clue was for the Roadblock, asking "Who is not lost in translation?". One team member had to decipher a message written in Hebrew using the local writing method from right-to-left on a scroll meant to resemble the Dead Sea Scrolls, then translate the message and write it down from left-to-right in order to receive their next clue. The scroll where it figure out their next location is at Central Post Office Building in Jerusalem.

At the Central Post Office Building, teams had to send the record message in the mail before they would receive their next clue. The clue was for the Detour involving religious aspects in the Holy City: Pilgrim's Trail or Holy Grail. In Pilgrim's Trail, teams travelled to the Old City where they picked up an 80 kg (180 lb) wooden cross and then carry it along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the path Jesus is said to have taken along to the site of his crucifixion. Teams would have to find each of the Stations of the Cross before delivering the cross at the end of the Via Dolorosa in order to receive their next clue. In Holy Grail, teams traveled to the Western Wall and joined an active archaeological dig site. Teams would have to unearth a clay pot and then deliver it to a man in the City of David for their next clue. The post-Detour clues teams instructed to walk the "rampart walk near the Dung Gate" to find their next clue, directed them to Aish HaTorah World Centre at the infamous Western Wall for the Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (Israel → Sri Lanka)

In the Sri Lankan town of Ambalangoda, teams had to search a street festival for a man wearing a particular mask the town is famous for to get their next clue.

At the start of the leg, teams informed to head next to Colombo, Sri Lanka. Upon arriving in Colombo, teams went to Gangaramaya Temple and find a Buddhist blessing to get their next clue. The clue was for the Detour, given the teams choice between Count or Carry. Both taking place at St. John's Fish Market. In Count, teams had to find a marked stall with a basket full of fish. They had to count the fish, and provide the correct total to receive their next clue. In Carry, teams had to use a wooden trolley to transfer 15 blocks of ice unbroken through a busy market to a specific marked stall to receive their next clue.

The post-Detour clues teams instructed to travel by train to Galle, and made their way to Galle Fort where teams had to go to the beach where they found a chest with a combination lock and a clue asking for the year Sri Lanka gained independence from the United Kingdom: 1948. This opened a second chest that asked for the year of birth of Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister Don Stephen Senanayake: 1884. The second chest contained their next clue.

The clue was told teams to travel by bus to Ambalangoda and find the train station for the next clue, involved them showing a photograph of a particular mask. They then had to search the a nearby street festival for a person wearing the matching mask in order to receive their next clue. The clue was eventually discovered for the Roadblock asking "Who can reap what they sew?". Teams made their way to Trendy Connection in Colombo, one team member had to use a professional sewing machine to properly sew a shirt using fabric cuttings before receiving their next clue. The clue instructing teams to head to the Pit Stop at Independence Square.

Leg 12 (Sri Lanka → Singapore → Australia)

At Hong San See Temple in Singapore's Central Area, teams were required to take a five-minute palm reading to receive their next clue.

Teams began the final leg where they informed to head to Singapore. Upon arrival, they went to Goh Chor Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple where they had to break durians in front of the stage and search for a durian with a red colour inside with a brightly-coloured flesh to receive their next clue. The clue was for the Detour, the teams choice between Dare or Stair. Both Detours must travel to Marina Bay Sands. In Dare, teams had to travel to Tower 1, take an elevator to the 55th floor, each team member had to traverse to Tower 2 by walking a tightrope to get their clue. In Stair, teams had travel to Tower 1, use the stairs to climb from the 55th-floor, take a Singaporean plush toy and then climb the other 56th floor Tower 2 of the hotel and exchange the souvenir for their next clue.

The post-Detour clues instructed teams to Hong San See Taoist Temple where they had to take a 5-minute palm reading from a fortune teller at the temple in order to receive their next clue, sending them to Jurong Chinese Garden and find a statue of Confucius to search the area with their next clue.

The clue teams instructed to travel to Singapore Flyer where they must ride inside one of the 28 Ferris wheel capsules and one of which contains their next clue, with 3 capsules have an actual clue to follow. If teams pick the wrong gondola, they have to do the full 20-minute rotation before picking a new gondola. The clue instructing teams to head for their final city: Perth.

Upon arriving in Perth, teams went to Kings Park War Memorial and Eternal Flame and searched the grounds for their next clue, instructing them to Fremantle Prison in Fremantle, where they had to unlock cells using provided keys. They must search over 100 doors for the one cell that contains their next clue.

The clue instructed teams to Cape Peron at Rockingham picked up the Roadblock clue, asking "Who won't flag under pressure?". One team member had to grab flags from the ten different countries they visited on the Race (including several decoy flags) and arrange them in the order that they visited them, the team member did not perform the task can not help to guide them. Once teams got the order of the flags correct, they would be allowed to retrieve the final clue, directing them to the Finish Line at Heirisson Island.
