The third season of The Amazing Race Canada is a reality game show based on the American series The Amazing Race. It features twelve teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship. The grand prize includes: a CA$250,000 cash payout, “gas for life” from Petro-Canada, the opportunity to fly for a year anywhere Air Canada flies worldwide in Business Class, and two Chevrolet Colorado "Z71" Trucks.[1] For the third year in a row, Jon Montgomery returned as the host.

The season premiere was aired on July 8, 2015. Hamilton brothers Gino & Jesse Montani were the winners of this season of The Amazing Race Canada.

Production

The starting line for the third season of The Amazing Race Canada is located in Québec City, at Dufferin Terrace (French), facing Château Frontenac.

Development and filming

On September 23, 2014, CTV announced that the show was renewed for a third season during the second season reunion special.[2]

This season, teams will face a brand new twist, called the Face Off, where teams have to compete head-to-head in a pre-determined challenge, where winning teams can move on to the next challenge, while the losing team must wait for new challengers. The team who looses the last "Face Off" must face a time penalty. This could potentially dramatically alter the placement order of teams throughout legs of the race.[3] In an article for the official Amazing Race Canada CTV website, the "Face Off" was described as "first and exclusive" to the Canadian edition with host Jon Montgomery stating that they "invented" the twist despite having already been introduced under various names in at least five other Amazing Race editions worldwide.[4]

This season featured sportscaster James Duthie, who helped the teams during the first Roadblock in Leg 1 and Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, who greeted the teams at the Pit Stop of Leg 6 in his hometown of Sudbury, Ontario.

Casting

Casting began in November 24, 2014, and as in the previous two seasons, an online site was used for submission of applications and audition videos.[2] The first three teams were revealed on June 15, 2015, with the rest named thereafter. The cast includes UFC mixed martial artist Elias Theodorou, footballer Nicholas "Nic" La Monaca and former CFL player Neil Lumsden. Hamilton Elliott is the first transgender contestant in the major English-language version of the Race. (Jervi Li of the inaugural season of The Amazing Race Philippines was the first transgender contestant overall.)[3]

Broadcasting

Similar to the previous season, after episode 7, a special mid-season reunion/recap titled "After The Race" aired. Hosted again by James Duthie, the program reviewed the events of the first 7 episodes with the first 6 eliminated teams, minus Amanda who was unable to attend. Duthie hosted another "After The Race" immediately after the season finale with every contestant present to review the season as a whole.

Marketing

Scotiabank discontinued their sponsorship while BMO Financial Group became the newest sponsor.

  1. ^ Hamilton & Michaelia immediately used their Express Pass to bypass the Detour of Leg 2.
  2. ^ Nic & Sabrina initially arrived 1st, but were issued a 2-hour penalty for failing to complete the soccer challenge. Seven teams checked in during their penalty time, dropping them to 8th place.
  3. ^ Nic & Sabrina arrived last at the Leg 5 Face Off, but could not compete against another team, since two other teams took time penalties rather than stay to finish the Face Off. Nic & Sabrina were not penalized for this. They also could not complete the "Ride It" Detour task after they were U-Turned as it was after dark and too unsafe. They received an unspecified time penalty at the task before continuing the race.

  6. ^ Dujean & Leilani and Neil & Kristin initially arrived 3rd and 4th respectively, but were issued a 2-hour penalty for failing to complete the time zone / flight time calculation challenge. Dujean & Leilani's placement was not affected. As Neil & Kristin were waiting out their penalty, the 3 remaining teams checked in, dropping them to 7th place and eliminating them with less than 2 minutes of penalty time remaining.
  7. ^ Dujean & Leilani chose to take a penalty because they could not finish the Brawn Detour due to an injury sustained by Leilani at the Roadblock. Already in last place, they also did not complete the Brains Detour when they saw they were U-Turned, and were told by the show's producers to go directly to the Pit Stop where they were eliminated without their penalties being applied.

Leg 1 (Quebec → Ontario)

Airdate: July 8, 2015

In Toronto, teams visited the historic St. Lawrence Market in downtown to find a butcher store

In the first Roadblock of the Race, one team member had to dress in a suit and tie and properly deliver a sports broadcast from a teleprompter alongside TSN sportscaster James Duthie. If at any point, they made eye contact with the wrong camera or mispronounced a player's name, they would have to start over. Once Duthie was satisfied with their performance, he would give them their next clue.

In the leg's second Roadblock, the team member did not perform the first Roadblock had to change into a wetsuit and complete a three-part obstacle course involving climbing across a 120-foot cargo net, walking across a narrow plank and taking a three-story plunge into the water below, and finally crossing a slippery log. At the end of the course, they would get their next clue.

Leg 2 (Ontario → Chile)

One of the Detour choices in Santiago required teams to participate in a traditional Rapa Nui dance, originated from Easter Island

During the Pit Stop, all teams were moved to Canoe Landing Park to begin this leg of the race. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to do a tandem paraglide into the skies of Santiago, 500 metres (1,600 ft) above sea level. Once they returned to the ground and reunited with their partner, a paragliding instructor would give them their next clue.

The Race's first Detour was a choice between Motion or Emotion. In Motion, teams traveled to Plaza de Armas where they had to strip down, then dress up as the people of Easter Island and perform a traditional Rapa Nui dance in front of a crowd. Once the dance troupe was satisfied, they would receive their next clue. In Emotion, teams traveled to Biblioteca Nacional de Chile where they learned a verse from Gabriela Mistral's famous poem, Valle de Chile and must perfectly recite it in Spanish. Once the poem is recited correctly, a judge would give them their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to collect a pack of Race sponsor Mentos candies labeled with letters from 3 stores. They brought them to a puzzle board in the neighborhood playground. They then had to figure out the clues to spell out the names of four famous Argentine people: (1) Argentina's most famous first lady (Eva Perón); (2) The first Pope from the Americas (Pope Francis); (3) La Boca's favorite footballer (Diego Maradona); and (4) The King of Tango (Carlos Gardel). Once all of those answers are right, they would receive their next clue.

The Detour was a choice between Dance or Dine. However, teams were informed that were only six spaces available at each Detour. In Dance, teams traveled to Confitería Ideal (Spanish) where both team members had to change into the traditional attire, and learn to perform a complex tango routine. If the judge is satisfied with their dance they would get their next clue. In Dine, teams traveled to La Estancia where they had to serve asado, with one team member being a server and the other being a chef. The server had to take an order, in Spanish, and memorize 12 dishes from three patrons and collect the dishes from the chef and serve to the patrons. If all 3 orders were correct, they would receive their next clue.

Leg 4 (Argentina → Nova Scotia)

The Roadblock in Halifax required teams to climb up Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in the city

Airdate: July 29, 2015

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to climb the 300 feet (91 m) support of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge where they stepped up between the narrow pathway and used binoculars to scan the city for the route marker. Once they spotted the route marker they had to figure out the location is at Citadel Hill where their next clue is located.

The Detour was a choice between Bubbles or Suds. In Bubbles, teams traveled to Aquatron Laboratory at the Dalhousie University campus where Ocean Tracking Network was headquartered, there they had to dive down to the bottom of the Aquatron, grab two lobsters each, and band and tag them into a real tracking device that monitors movements. Once they were tagged, they would receive their next clue. In Suds, teams traveled to Garrison Brewing Company and had to find a delivery truck where they had to deliver beers, on foot, to three pubs among the streets of Downtown Halifax. They were instructed to return two kegs from each location. Once all three beers were delivered and two kegs returned they would get their next clue.

Leg 5 (Nova Scotia → Quebec)

In this leg of the Race, teams visited the Magdalen Islands in Quebec, known for its rock formations and sandstone landscapes

Airdate: August 5, 2015

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to Victoria Park to start the leg. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to bury their non-participating partner beneath the sand, with only their head visible, then, using a sample for reference, recreate a sandcastle around them. Once the work is approved, they would receive their next clue.

The Detour was a choice between Ride It or Pull It. In Ride It, teams traveled to Centre équestre La Crinière au Vent (French) where they had to master the equestrian art of dressage form by mounting a horse and riding an obstacle course. If both team members finish in a combined time of eight minutes or less, an equestrian rider would give them their next clue. In Pull It, teams traveled to La ferme Léo et Fils (French), where they had to roll a 75 pounds (34 kg) bale of hay from a pasture into a barn, then milk a cow by hand until each team member fills a 1-litre bottle. Once they finished, they would receive their next clue.

Leg 6 (Quebec → Ontario)

The Big Nickel in Sudbury, at Ontario's Northern region, a city that is famous for its ore mining, was visited by the Race

Airdate: August 12, 2015

The Fast Forward was teams had to feed a Blanding's turtle a tray of mealworms, crickets and superworms, and then each team member had to eat a dish of the same themselves. Once they finished, they would win the Fast Forward award.

The Detour was a choice between Analyze and Synchronize, both are limited to 4 teams at a time. Both Detours requiring teams to drive themselves to Laurentian University. In Analyze, teams had to travel to the Forensics Training Facility and had to locate 10 pieces of bones and teeth inside a simulated crime scene, mark each spot with a flag, measure the locations, and graph each piece to scale on an evidence sheet. Once the evidence was graphed correctly, a crime scene analyst would give them their next clue. In Synchronize, teams had to travel to Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Gold Pool where they had to master synchronized swimming, joining a competitive synchronized swimmers team and perform a routine with them. Once they perform the routine correctly, they would receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to learn CPR, enter a life simulation lab and correctly perform CPR for two minutes on a state-of-the-art computerized mannequin. Once this is done correctly, a certified CPR instructor would give them their next clue.

Leg 7 (Ontario → Saskatchewan)

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to Sudbury's Bridge of Nations to start the leg. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to complete a three-part trampoline course. First they had to bounce sequentially on nine trampolines without touching any surrounding mats, then jump over a foam wall without knocking it over, and finally jump high enough to ring a bell to get their next clue.

The Detour was a choice between Nimitook or Mikwap, where they must travel to Wanuskewin Heritage Park to take part in the daily aspects in the life of Northern Plains Indians culture. In Nimitook, teams had to perform a traditional hoop dance. Using a professional hoop dancer for guidance, they must dance to the beat of a traditional drum while making 5 spiritually symbolic shapes in order to receive their next clue. In Mikwap, teams had to build a teepee using tools provided and a shown model. Once the teepee is built correctly, the elder would give them their next clue.

Leg 8 (Saskatchewan → India)

One of the Detour choices in Kolkata required teams to navigate India's traditional man-powered rickshaws through Kolkata's congested streets

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to the Canada Games Memorial Clock Tower in Kiwanis Memorial Park to start the leg. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to find a stall containing many figurines of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. Then, using a photograph given in their clue for reference, they had to search among the figurines to find one with a single difference that matched the one in the photograph. If they were correct, they would receive their next clue.

The Detour was a choice between Tuck or Roll. In Tuck, teams traveled to Jorasanko Thakur Bari where they had to learn six couples' yoga poses. Once they correctly performed all six, the guru Yogi Biswa would give them their next clue. In Roll, teams traveled to University Institute Hall where, using a rickshaw, they had to navigate Kolkata's crowded streets to make two deliveries to different locations: a load of plastic bottles to a soda shop, and bundles of cloth to a decorating store. Once both deliveries were successfully completed, they would return the rickshaw in exchange for their next clue.

Leg 9 (India)

Humayun's Tomb in Delhi was the Pit Stop for this leg of the Race

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to Oberoi Grand Hotel in Downtown Kolkata to start the leg. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to wrap three different styles of turbans onto the heads of waiting men for a traditional wedding party. Once all three turbans are approved, they would receive their next clue.

The Detour was a choice between Slam It or Spice It. In Slam It, teams traveled to Roshanara Garden Wrestling Club and had to learn a series of seven traditional kushti wrestling moves in sequence from a pehlwani and then correctly perform it for a judge to receive their next clue. In Spice It, teams traveled to Khari Baoli and had to find a spice market where they would use a mortar and pestle to grind eye-watering chilis into a fine powder, and then take it to a weighing scale. Once their powder weighed at least 100 grams (3.5 oz), they would receive their next clue.

Leg 10 (India → British Columbia)

Teams visited Osoyoos, in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, known for its desert and lakes, for this leg of the Race

Airdate: September 9, 2015

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member must ride a wakeboard and complete a course on Lake Okanagan that includes a flat ramp followed by a steep one, while their non-participating partner rode in the motorboat with an instructor. Once they complete the course without falling off, the instructor would give them their next clue.

The Speed Bump required Brent & Sean had to fill, cork, and label a dozen bottles of wine, then properly dip the neck of each bottle in wax to create a seal. Once all twelve were correct before they could continue with the Detour.

The Detour was a choice between Brains and Brawn. In Brains, teams had to use provided coordinates to search a vineyard for three bottles of wine. Then, they had to use a giant slingshot to launch a potato at a target. Finally, they had to operate a forklift to stack ten wooden pallets. In Brawn, teams had to carry and toss ten 65 pound (29 kg) bags of onions onto the back of a truck. Then, they had to flip a large tractor tire 100 meters and place it on a rack. Finally, they had to simultaneously cross monkey bars over a pile of a manure.

Leg 11 (British Columbia → Alberta)

The Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton served as the Pit Stop for this leg of the race

Airdate: September 17, 2015

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to Spotted Lake near Osoyoos to start the leg. The Detour was a Blind Detour, which simply gave teams a choice of "Paper" or "Plastic". In Paper, they had to sort recyclables from a fast-moving conveyor belt into two bins, one for paper and another for non-paper items, then weigh them once filled. If both bins weighed at least 13 kilograms (29 lb) each, they would receive their next clue. In Plastic, they had to carefully dismantle six dead television sets and separate the specific components to receive their next clue. If they broke any components, they would have to get another television.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to take part for playing the role of "Kelly", the proprietor/bartender and must memorize a script to take part in a historical reenactment of a liquor license raid. If they got a line wrong, they would have to go review the script and try again. Once they acted out the scene correctly, they would receive their next clue.

Leg 12 (Alberta → British Columbia)

The resort town of Whistler in British Columbia was the main site of the final leg of The Amazing Race Canada 3

Airdate: September 23, 2015

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to Art Gallery of Alberta in Downtown Edmonton to start the leg. In the leg's first Roadblock, one team member had to successfully cross a narrow plank (painted with a crooked guide line) between the roof beams on a bicycle while suspended 200 feet (61 m) above the ground to receive their next clue.

In the final Roadblock of the Race, the team member that didn't perform the first Roadblock was given a single ski of specific height and binding size, and had to search among thousands of skis on racks for the one that completes the set, then show it to an instructor. Once they had a matching pair, both team members had to ride the Peak 2 Peak Gondola to Blackcomb Peak and make their way to Momentum Ski Camp. For the second part of the Roadblock, the participating team member had to ski down a ramp and successfully complete a ski jump into a pool to receive their final clue.
